Overview  

 

 

Aim of the project is the architectural design for open-air communal activities. The main issues of the analysis are the public – private and indoor – outdoor relations, as well as the integration of the project in the urban space. Moreover, theoretical considerations over the use of open-air architectural formations with emphasis in natural and artificial materials, are attempted in order to define the design concept.

 

The proposal is divided in four distinct unities which are connected through a main walking route. The crossing of the plot from Piraeus Street towards Keramikos site signifies a transition from strict lines and geometrical shapes to more flexible and plastic forms, as well as a change from robust materials such as concrete to mild ones, such as soil. Finally, the larger scale is replaced by a smaller, while the constructions are gradually limited. 

 

A. The first unity, which is adjacent to Piraeus street is protected from traffic, noise and pollution with a densely planted sloped terrain. Basic characteristic of that part is the circular water surface and the bar - café which is partially above the water. 

 

B. The second unity is also a rest area facing the Gazi comlex, while the pedestrian axis of Ermou Street becomes integrated to the plot. The use of the circular shape is a direct reference to the great circular metal constructions of Gazi.

 

C. The third unity houses a linear exhibition space and also an open-air theater, with view to the Acropolis, which hosts cultural activities and largely creates a dialog with the adjacent Gazi complex. 

 

D. The fourth unity is freely organized more as a park and less as a square, including a playground with improvised constructions for kids. Moreover, the rise that is created not only provides a resting area with panoramic view to Lycabetus hill and Acropolis, but also a connection

with the opposite side of the train.
